For years Fourth Street was a lunch-and-errands corridor with a handful of destination dinners tucked in for people who knew where to look. The 2026 calendar is a different animal. If you already live here, you have probably noticed that Friday nights downtown are no longer one thing happening at one address. They are three or four things stacked on the same six blocks, and the city and the business improvement district timed them to overlap on purpose.

That is the shift worth naming. The new openings, the reworked Summer Market, the block parties at the West End, and the Art Walk are not a roundup of unrelated updates. They are a single argument that Fourth Street is now an evening street.

The Friday That Runs The Season

The center of gravity is the second Friday of each month. The City of San Rafael's summer schedule confirms the Friday Summer Market Downtown runs 2nd Fridays, June 12 through September 11, 2026, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Fourth and A. The Agricultural Institute of Marin partnered with the city to add a Pond Farm beer garden, live music, and Youth in Arts programming, and several of those evenings overlap with the Second Friday Art Walk.

Here is what actually stacks on those four dates:

A resident's practical takeaway: the second Friday is the night to plan a walking dinner rather than a sit-down reservation. The market anchors the east end of the shopping stretch, the galleries open along the same corridor, and the restaurants that stay busy on those nights are the ones that let you order and move.

Two New Anchors That Change The Walking Radius

Two openings landed on Fourth Street in 2026 that shift where a downtown evening ends. Giorgio's Pizzeria, the San Francisco institution, is expanding to Fourth Street with construction underway and an expected opening in early 2026. Hidden Splendor Beer, a new brewery and taproom from the founder of Magnolia Brewing, is also slated for a Fourth Street arrival in early 2026, with a focus on classic, balanced styles and a relaxed neighborhood room rather than the aggressively hop-forward taproom format.

Those two matter because of what was already here. Pond Farm Brewing has been the reliable local pour on the market and event side. The Burren House brought an Irish pub anchor with a fish-and-chips reputation the Yelp regulars will not stop writing about. Sol Food still runs the weekday lunch line. And the Marin Magazine dining guide profiles Tomoharu Shono's downtown ramen room on Fourth, where the flour is ground on a Japanese stone mill in the kitchen and the toripaitan was designed specifically for this location.

Add Giorgio's for a walkable slice-or-pie stop and Hidden Splendor for a low-key pint before or after, and the west-of-Lincoln stretch finally has the anchors it needed to hold a full evening on its own. You no longer have to plan the night around one reservation.

The Block Party That Extends The Season Into October

The Summer Market wraps on September 11. What the Downtown San Rafael BID has announced is that the West End Fridays Block Party runs eight consecutive Fridays from August 15 through October 10 on Fourth between F and G, from 6 to 9 p.m., brought by Pint Size Lounge.

The overlap matters. From mid-August through mid-September, both are running on the same nights on the same street, roughly six blocks apart. From mid-September through October 10, the West End keeps a Friday-night draw going after the Summer Market has closed for the season. If you live in Gerstle Park, Sun Valley, or the West End itself, that is functionally a two-month extension of walking-distance evenings.

Fourth Street in San Rafael has been accumulating momentum for a few years. In 2026 it has three distinct openings that make the stretch worth a detour.

The Sunday Counterweight

The Friday pattern only works because there is a Sunday one holding the other end. The Marin Civic Center Certified Farmers Market runs every Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., year-round, and has been recognized as one of the top ten markets in the country. It is a Frank Lloyd Wright building acting as a market pavilion, which is not a claim most counties can make.

For a resident, the practical rhythm reads like this. Sunday morning is the pantry and produce run at the Civic Center. Second Friday evening is Fourth and A for prepared food, a beer, and whatever gallery is open on the Art Walk. West End Fridays fills in the shoulder Fridays. Those three fixtures do most of the work of a social calendar without anyone having to consult one.

When Summer Hands Off To Fall

Late August through October is where the programming gets denser, not thinner. The city's events calendar lists Movies in the Park across four Fridays: August 28 at Victor Jones Park, September 11 at Sun Valley Park, September 25 at Terra Linda Park, and October 9 at Pickleweed Park, each starting ten minutes after sunset. The rotation is deliberate. Every quadrant of the city gets a screening.

Downtown then hands off to the fall traditions. The Downtown San Rafael events page lists Trick Or Treat on Fourth Street and the Pet Costume Contest on October 24, 2026, followed by Dia de los Muertos altar displays through October and November, and the 45th Annual San Rafael Holiday of Lights and Winter Wonderland on Shop Small Saturday, November 26, 2026.

The Holiday of Lights is the tell. Forty-five years is not a marketing campaign. It is the reason the tree-lighting crowd on Fourth Street knows the drill without any signage.

What This All Means For A Resident's Calendar

If you have lived here for a decade, none of these pieces are foreign. What is new is that they are running in sequence and on shared nights. A short list of what to actually put in the calendar:

• June 12, July 10, August 11, September 11: Summer Market at 4th & A, 5–9 p.m., often with Art Walk on the same block.
• August 15 through October 10: West End Fridays, 4th between F and G, 6–9 p.m.

Cross those with the two new Fourth Street rooms, Giorgio's and Hidden Splendor Beer, plus the ramen room at 908 Fourth, and the phrase "we should walk downtown tonight" starts doing more work than it used to.

The reason to notice all of this now, rather than in December when the lights are up, is that the pattern is still being set. The Summer Market only recently got expanded dates and the AIM partnership. West End Fridays is a new eight-week format. Giorgio's and Hidden Splendor Beer are opening into a corridor that was not, until this year, a full evening street.
